About Time Duration Calculator
Enter a start and an end time to get the exact hours, minutes and seconds between them, overnight shifts and unpaid breaks included.
Every result is also given in decimal hours, total minutes and total seconds, ready for a timesheet, an invoice or a payroll sheet.
Two more modes add up a list of durations or move a time forward or back, for example the finish time of an 8 hour 30 minute shift.
Key Features
- Time between two times: with or without dates, across midnight and across days.
- Unpaid breaks: subtract a lunch break in minutes from the time worked.
- Decimal hours: 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5, the way most payroll systems want it.
- Add and subtract durations: any number of lines in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Time plus duration: the finish time and the day it falls on.
- Daylight saving aware: with dates entered, a clock change in between counts as the real hour it is.
How to Use
- Choose a mode: time between, add up durations, or time plus duration.
- Enter the times: add dates only when the span is longer than a day.
- Subtract a break: enter unpaid minutes to get the hours worked.
- Read the result: hours and minutes, decimal hours, minutes and seconds.
- Copy it: the duration and decimal hours go to your clipboard together.
Common Use Cases
- Timesheets: hours worked per day with the lunch break taken off.
- Night shifts: 22:00 to 06:30 counted correctly across midnight.
- Freelance invoices: total several work sessions and bill in decimal hours.
- Video and audio editing: add up clip lengths in hours, minutes and seconds.
- Planning: find when a task, a trip or a cooking time will end.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 45 minutes is 0.75 hours and 20 minutes is about 0.33 hours. The calculator shows the decimal value for every result.
How are overnight shifts handled?
Without dates, an end time earlier than the start is taken as the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. Add dates for spans longer than 24 hours.
What happens when the clocks change?
With dates entered, the real time passed is counted: a night with a clock change can be 7 or 9 hours from 22:00 to 06:00. Without dates, the times are read as a plain clock difference.
Can I add more than 24 hours?
Yes. Totals are shown in hours beyond 24, for example 30:00:00, with the number of days alongside.
How do I subtract a duration?
In Add up durations, set a line to Subtract. In Time plus duration, choose Subtract to go back from a time.
Which time format is used?
Times follow your browser’s settings: 24-hour or AM/PM. Results are shown as hours:minutes:seconds.
Pro Tips
- Round only at the end: add exact durations first and round the decimal hours once.
- Use dates for multi-day work: a 36-hour job needs a start and an end date.
- Copy straight to a spreadsheet: decimal hours multiply directly by an hourly rate.
- Add lines for each session: subtract the pauses as their own lines.
- Working with dates instead: the date calculator counts days, weeks and months between dates.
