About Webcam Test
This page checks your camera the moment you allow it: a live preview with the resolution it really delivers, not just the size it claims.
The frame rate is counted from the frames that actually arrive, so you see whether dim light or a busy USB port is making video choppy.
It also lists the largest resolution and frame rate your camera supports, and lets you save a snapshot exactly as shown.
Key Features
- Live preview: see the picture at once, mirrored like a video call or as others see it.
- Real resolution: the width and height the camera delivers, in pixels and megapixels.
- Measured frame rate: frames per second counted from the video itself, updated every second.
- Camera limits: the largest resolution and highest frame rate the camera reports.
- Resolution choice: request 4K, Full HD, HD or SD to see what your camera can do at each.
- Snapshot: save the current picture as a PNG image.
How to Use
- Press Start camera: allow camera access when your browser asks.
- Pick the camera: choose between built-in, USB, phone front and back cameras.
- Choose a resolution: leave Best available to get the largest size the camera offers.
- Read the details: resolution and measured frame rate update every second.
- Save a snapshot: keep a picture to compare lighting or framing later.
Common Use Cases
- Before a video call: check framing, light and focus before joining a meeting.
- New webcam: confirm it really delivers the 1080p or 4K on the box.
- Choppy video: find out whether low light or a high resolution is cutting the frame rate.
- Black screen: tell a closed privacy shutter from a camera that is in use elsewhere.
- Streaming setup: compare cameras and positions before going live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the video recorded or uploaded?
No. The picture is shown on this page only, and a snapshot is saved to your device when you ask for it.
Why is my frame rate lower than the camera says?
Most webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to collect more light per frame. More light, or a lower resolution, usually brings it back to 30 fps.
Why is the preview mirrored?
Video calls show you a mirrored image because that is what you see in a mirror. Others see you unmirrored; switch Mirror off to see that view.
Why can I not choose another camera?
Browsers list your cameras only after you allow access once. Start the camera, allow it, and every connected camera appears.
The camera is in use by another app. What now?
Only one app can use most webcams at a time. Close the call app or the other tab that uses it, then press Start camera again.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. On phones you can switch between the front and back cameras in the device list.
Pro Tips
- Light from the front: a window behind you darkens your face and lowers the frame rate.
- Camera at eye level: a laptop on a few books looks far better than one looking up at you.
- Check the real resolution: some apps ask for less than your camera can give; this page shows the maximum.
- Use a USB 3 port: a 4K webcam on a busy hub may fall back to a lower mode.
- Test your microphone too: the mic test checks level, clipping and playback the same way.
